Merida is known in Mexico as the "White City" for its white antique buildings. Merida is the Capital of Yucatan and its biggest city. In the last decade has grown very quickly and people from different parts of Mexico and other countries are coming to live here.
Some people that hear of Merida, what a great peaceful place and extraordinary location it has, are concern about the cost of living in Merida. Here is what you need to know, if you are coming for a vacation and want to have a few nights to visit the archeology and center of Merida then it might be a little expensive the rent of a hotel(like $300 dollars a night). However its a lot cheaper that going directly to cities like Cancun and Cozumel that are near.
On the other hand if you want to come to Merida to live and retire its in fact cheaper, because you have more value for your dollars here. Im not saying that the difference its huge, but in most cases you can have a higher living standard here with the same amount of money you spend elsewhere.
While in other countries you live in a very small place even if its a first world country, here in Merida, Mexico many people from the middle class have relatively extensive homes with garden and pool which is unheard in other places.
Merida is growing a lot and you can find here anything that you need for your comfort, since mcdonalds and other fast food franchises to sams club wallmart and of course you can always use also the local stores or go to the center of Merida where you can find a lot of cultural entertainment.
Merida has been known as one of the safest places to live in Mexico and its also in a great location, you are here very near the beach and a few hours from cancun and playa del carmen. You can visit the Archeology ruins like Uxmal and Chichen Itza.
